EQ for RCIA Sponsors

EQ for RCIA Sponsors

(For New & Existing RCIA Sponsors)

Overview

Serving as an RCIA sponsor involves more than attending sessions or answering questions. Sponsors accompany individuals through a season marked by reflection, change, uncertainty, and personal transition. In these moments, how a sponsor listens, responds, and remains present often has a greater impact than what is said.

EQ for RCIA Sponsors is a structured training program designed to support new and existing sponsors by strengthening the human and relational skills essential for effective accompaniment. The course focuses on Emotional Intelligence (EQ)—the ability to recognize emotions, manage reactions, understand others, and build trust over time with catechumens.

Rather than teaching beliefs or doctrine, this training addresses the relational realities of sponsorship: navigating silence, responding to doubt, managing emotional tension, respecting individual pace, and creating emotional safety. EQ provides sponsors with a steady foundation to accompany catechumens with clarity, calm, and care throughout the RCIA journey.

Key Points:

  • EQ training helps sponsors remain attentive and grounded without feeling pressure to explain or resolve everything.
  • Sponsors learn how to create relational environments where catechumens feel respected, heard, and supported.
  • EQ supports consistency, patience, and emotional steadiness over time.
  • The training is grounded in real sponsor–catechumen scenarios rather than theory or instruction.

Features & Design

  • Structured around the four core EQ skills: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management.
  • Real-life RCIA scenarios reflecting common emotional and relational challenges.
  • Guided reflection questions, reviews, and applied exercises for participants.
  • Clear, accessible language suitable for first-time and experienced sponsors.
  • Designed to complement parish RCIA formation, not replace it.

  • Develop steadier responses during uncertainty, silence, or tension.
  • Learn to observe emotional cues without assumption or pressure.
  • Build trust through consistency, boundaries, and respectful presence.
  • Growing in confidence as emotionally grounded and reliable companions.

Delivery & Pricing

This program is offered as a donation-sponsored initiative exclusively for Catholic parish communities and RCIA ministries. A nominal administrative fee is required to offset printing costs for participant workbooks and training materials. Due to strong demand, bookings are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to the availability of the training consultant. Each session is limited to a maximum of 20 participants to ensure optimal effectiveness and engagement. The program is available as:

  • Parish-based training (in-house format only).
  • Integrated delivery alongside RCIA recruitment activities or offered as a dedicated pre-sponsorship training session.
  • Parish-supported logistics with the parish providing the venue, audio and video equipment, and refreshments or meals for its own participants.
  • Optional companion resource:  The book “Journeying with You” (Second Edition) will be available for purchase as a practical companion tool to help RCIA sponsors reinforce the skills learned during the workshop and support ongoing reflection and action after the course. Readers’ Feedback
